Testimonial.....

My name is Chelsea Rouse and I just got back from a Habitat build in Mandeville Louisiana with my UWGB. I am interested in doing another build closer to my home town. Any information would be great so I can sign up right away! Thank you so much! Habitat is the most rewarding thing I have ever done.

Lead safe work procedures will be followed in preparing the jobs. Two projects have been completed and three additional applicants have been approved. Global Village

Global Village, Habitat for Humanity's international affordable housing program, builds homes outside of the United States with volunteers from North America and other developed regions of the world. While Global Village teams have been sent from many parts of the United States, Door County Habitat for Humanity had never recruited a work crew for foreign service -- until last year, that is.

Leaving Wisconsin on April 28th, five Wisconsin residents -- Carrie Link, Don Heeringa, Doreen Holt, Cindy LaRoque and Rick Nelson -- traveled to La Mosquitia, the isolated eastern region of Honduras. There, in the community of Puerto Lempira, the team worked with contractors, Habitat staff and the future homeowner's family to build a two bedroom home. This represents the first house in a 30 unit pilot project undertaken by Habitat Honduras. While nearly 11,000 homes have been constructed by Habitat for Humanity in Honduras, this is the first time that homes have been built among the Miskito People. The Door County Habitat for Humanity work crew was the first foreign team to venture into the region.

Jarly Rivas, the father of the family that now owns a new home, is a 44 year old former truck driver who was paralyzed in a fall and has been confined to a wheel chair for the past two years. His wife, Emelda, who works washing laundry, is currently the only source of income for the family of seven. Jarly, Emelda and the children were anxious to move out of their previous home which was constructed of wood and corrugated tin, had two beds, no plumbing and no bathroom. Orly, the eldest son of Jarly and Emelda, became a constant companion of North American workers, assisting not only in home construction, but also in impromptu Spanish lessons for the visitors.

The Wisconsinites shoveled fill, sifted sand, mixed lime/cement/sand/water to make mortar, laid concrete blocks, compacted fill within the structure, tied rebar, built foundation forms, hauled concrete blocks, carried water and generally helped out wherever William Suazo, the local mason, told them to. By the time that we left Puerto Lempira on May 7th, the four exterior walls were up. The Rivas house, along with 13 others in the project, was dedicated in December in time for Christmas.

Door County's second Global Village trip took place between January 26th and February 5, 2012. Stay tuned for updates and watch for news of a third Global Village trip in 2013.
